When you’re shopping for new flooring, you may hear a lot of industry language, and it can get confusing. Between engineered hardwood, laminate, and vinyl flooring, you might need to stop and ask some questions, such as: What’s the difference between LVP and LVT flooring?
Production Method
The main difference between LVP (luxury vinyl plank), LVT (luxury vinyl tile), and traditional vinyl flooring is that the latter is produced in sheets that are rolled out and cut to fit an entire floor. On the other hand, both types of luxury vinyl flooring are produced in pieces that are installed one by one over the subfloor, much like various types of hardwood or tile. The other differentiator from traditional sheet vinyl is that luxury vinyl flooring is printed with a sophisticated, digitally developed image to make it look very much like wood or tile. It may even have a texture that imitates that of natural materials.
Shape
The major difference between LVP and LVT flooring itself is the shape: LVP flooring comes in planks that mimic hardwood flooring, while LVT flooring comes in squares that may look like natural stone, concrete, or porcelain tile. Both products are made in layers, including a top or wear layer that protects the image layer beneath. Then there may be a core layer that helps the flooring retain its shape and a cushioning layer to make the floor more comfortable to walk over.
Installation Methods
Both LVP and LVT flooring may be installed in click-together planks or tiles that “float” over the subfloor. Alternatively, LVP and LVT can be glued down. Both types are durable and easy to maintain with a broom or damp mop. They’re water and stain resistant, but a glued-down installation may be more difficult to remove for repair should pets, kids, or stains get past the material’s natural defenses.
